Message from Pastor Jean-Claude Duncan - July 2010:

On the River's Edge

"You could not step into the same river twice." I thought about these words penned by philosopher Heraclitus in about 500 BC as I stood with my sandalled feet in the edge waters of a rapidly moving river.

Everything matched my memory from when I last stood enraptured with the beauty of that location. High above, the nest that had housed new young still teemed with the activity of those young reminding their parents to return with something that would satisfy a growing hunger for the experience of flight. The grass, now adorned with crowns, drew its abundance from the sun and showed its productivity as it gracefully waltzes in the breeze. A butterfly carelessly flaunted its short lived beauty in the flashes of the sun reflecting from the river.

Around my feet, it was different. The cool water moved with a purpose and pulled items from distant shores. Muddy rocks thrown in the river rested clean. The quick progeny of the generations was ever pulling life from the ever moving waters. Even the abundance of the shores found its life in those living waters.

Water. That is the Church. It is ever moving, yet generally stays in its banks. It is ever moving and refreshing, it will change those who enter, yet appears the same from the shore. Sure it might spill over or decrease its flow, but even then, it is ever moving from its source to its end. Jump in, the waters are welcoming!

May you always remain in Christ,
Rev. Jean-Claude (JC) Duncan
